IT'S not everyday you get to witness a turtle being released but yesterday this group of STEM students were part of such an experience. The Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation centre hosted a group of Year 9 and 10 science students as part of the ConocoPhillips science experience in conjunction with Central Queensland University. The program included a rotation of activities including water monitoring, visiting the turtle rehab and making art.

ABOUT 20 year 9 and 10 students from across North and North-West Tasmania, including one from Flinders Island, are spending three days immersed in everything science. The ConocoPhillips Science Experience at the University of Tasmania exposes the students to hands-on science lab sessions with expert scientists. On Tuesday morning they were learning how to make aspirin from scratch,and will also be exposed to ICT, architecture and design, agriculture, marine science, and health, College of Science and Engineering Community and Student Engagement manager Jeannie-Marie Leroisaid. “We give them an idea of what they can study in science,what career options are available to them–just trying to open up their horizons,” she said. “There’s a whole range of different careers out there, and as long as you’ve got that understanding of thinking critically, thinking scientifically, those skills can stand you in good stead whatever you decide to study.” –FRANCES VINALL
